Book discussion with Jessica C. Lai and Yaniv Benhamou - 17 September 2026

The changes brought about by the advent of AI require a radical rethinking of models for protecting and compensating artists.

Prof. Yaniv Benhamou explores this issue in his book Creative Value Chains : Copyright and Beyond for a Better Value Distribution, recently published by Bristol University Press. By enriching his legal analysis with his knowledge of musical practice, he proposes new models for the distribution of profits. Prof. Jessica C. Lai will offer a critical review of this book, expanding her analysis beyond continental European legal systems, and will engage in a discussion with the author, focusing in particular on imbalances of power and representation.

Professor Jessica Lai (Victoria University of Wellington) specialises in intellectual property, especially patent law, the protection of Mātauranga Māori, and patents and gender. Jessica is the author of Indigenous Cultural Heritage and Intellectual Property Rights (Springer, 2014) and Patent Law and Women (Routledge, 2021). She was named a Rutherford Discovery Fellow by the New Zealand Royal Society Te Apārangi in 2021 and is currently working on a critical analysis of knowledge governance.

Professor Yaniv Benhamou (University of Geneva) specializes in digital law and intellectual property. He leads the Geneva Digital Law Center and is a member of the Swiss Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television.
